Music and Movies that are out there and stuff.

The John Butler Trio
Oh, Australia. Thank you for producing this wonderful music. It is a delight and wonderfully treat-like. As in I love it. Cause it is just amazing, basically.

Yeah- I laughed a lot. Don't know if everybody else thought it was funny. I heard a lot of pity laughs in the theater. Being as how I saw it in Provo, not too terribly surprised to see that.

Something out of a bad B-movie. Must be a government conspiracy.

Aversive Racism Rears Its Ugly Head

White people - especially intelligent and educated white people - calmly describing their fellow American citizens as niggers is too often portrayed as a thing of the past. Or of ignorant red necks. That all ended in the 1960s, the official version goes. Martin Luther King and JFK put a stop to it. The truth is far different. Things have changed hugely since the 1960s but that period of time is not yet history.

For the really scary thing about Lizzie talking about 'niggers' was not that she had those opinions. It was that she clearly was unaware voicing them would be shocking. It was a useful reminder of how close some 'history' really is. There are people alive today who have been involved in lynching black Americans or those working for their civil rights.

Good to see someone recognizing it. The British view is interesting and a little different than mine. But it brings up a good point. Racism has changed since the civil rights movement of the 1960s but it is still there. We cannot claim that we are not racist- if we do that we are misleading ourselves. The best we can do is claim that we are trying to not be racist. Indeed.

CNN.com - Decorated conscientious objector buried with honors - Apr 4, 2006

Medal of Honor Society records show he(Desmond T. Doss Sr.) was among 3,442 recipients of the nation's highest military honor.
While under fire on the island of Okinawa, Doss carried 75 wounded soldiers to the edge of a 400-foot cliff and lowered them to safety, according to his citation.
During a later attack, he was seriously wounded in the legs by a grenade. According to the citation, as he was being carried to safety, he saw a more critically injured man and crawled off his stretcher, directing the medics to help the other man.
'He wanted to serve. He just didn't want to kill anybody,' said a veteran who attended the service, Fred Headrick, 85. 'Most all of [Medal of Honor recipients] received their medal for killing someone. He received his by saving lives.'
